OEM MODULES Modules available to approved suppliers of water treatment systems. A number of modules are operated in parallel, to provide required flow rate. Zena membranes. For more details of Zena submerged hollow fibre membranes please refer to www.zena-membranes.cz Fibres are polypropylene with nominal pore size of 0.1 micron, suitable for rejection of suspended solids including bacteria. The fibres are satisfactory for a pH range of 2 to 10 and temperature to 50 degC Zena membranes are particularly suited to applications with high suspended solids, and usually flow is from outside to the hollow inside. For the modules shown the pressure differential is developed by a partial vacuum applied to the hollow centres. Bundles. Each bundle has some 1400 fibres with a total effective surface area 0f 0.8 m2. Optimal flow rate depends on the specific job conditions and can easily range from 15 to 60 litres/m2/ hour/bar in applications from activated sludge to rainwater. At 0.4 bar differential pressure that is 5 to 20 litres/hour/bundle. A "nominal" figure of 10 litres/hour/bundle should generally be conservative . For critical applications trials will be required for a more accurate figure. Modules. Solids are continually stopped at the fibre surface, as clear water flows through. For reliable operation, solids must be prevented from clogging the fibre pores. The construction of these modules is entirely aimed at producing a strong upflow of raw water past the fibres. Fibres are contained within a 100 or 150 mm tube, that is submerged in a larger tank. Low pressure air introduced down the central pipe of the module, induces a strong upflow of outside water ,past the fibres. The effect is gravitational, and uses minimum energy input. Zena bundle construction encourages movement of the individual fibres to shake off solids. The automatic backflush does lift particles off the fibre surface. However without the circulation of raw water, particles will quickly return to the fibre surface, and eventually clog the whole bundle. |
![]() Operation. There will be a normal cycle of clean to dirty between automatic backflush. A typical variation of partial vacuum could be 25 to 35 kPa (ie equivalent to change 2.5 to 4.5 metres pump suction lift ) Ideally the pump should maintain a constant flow . Backflush water is returned to the raw water tank. It represents a loss in production but not a loss of water. Removal of solids by some water to waste is a different operation. Maintenance. The module should not need attention for weeks at a time, with adequate air agitation and backflush arrangements. Some applications there may have a tenacious surface fouling, or a biofilm build up . The module is constructed to allow easy removal of the membrane surfaces, for cleaning with appropriate detergent, or biocide. |
